Opponent: Baylor Bears

, Coach

On QB Frank Harris making his debut:

To start off the game 13 for 14 and then to have the next one right on spot and we dropped a couple to be quite honest. His accuracy and playmaking ability was there. He was smart a lot of times to do the things we’ve trained him to do ‚Äì to slide, to go out of bounds. Go get it when you have to go get it but try to be minimal in absorbing those licks. All those things came to bare itself throughout the duration of the game. We had very, very high expectations since the moment we got here for Frank Harris and it’s taken a while to get here. I wouldn’t say we were surprised because we’ve had some good defenses in the past and whether it was in a spring or fall camp he slashed that against our very talented defenses that we have had on our campus. To see him do that against someone else was confirmation of something we thought.

On Baylor:

Offensively, they are about three deep in the backfield. They are all capable guys that have started at one point in another, with big play ability that catch the ball out of the backfield. A veteran quarterback ‚Äì a two-year starter ‚Äì that runs their offense very efficiently. That is not a designated runner but mobile enough to extend plays, to tuck it when he needs to, but yet a very accurate passer as well. Guys on the perimeter with big play ability with size and speed. They have three guys there that played in the game against us last year and had catches and had meaningful roles. A tight end ‚Äì a 6-6 guy who caught a couple of balls against us last year, that is not to be slept in. And a veteran offensive line group, led by their center. From a defensive standpoint, it will be interesting to see. They were predominately a four-down team a year ago. They sprinkled some odd, or three-down defense in against Stephen F. Austin. We’ll prepare for both accordingly to be able to play against a veteran defense as well with backers that run downhill in a hurry and are not happy when they get to the ball carrier. They are a physical football team. The back end has some track guys in there, that can really run and are six-footers with good speed that defend the deep ball well. We’ll have to be very poignant in understanding how to attack this offense and defense. It is going to require our undivided attention in this week of preparation.

On the offensive line performance:

As a unit, I thought they were solid. Here is the thing, when you look at it I would be must more concerned if guys were just getting their butts whipped. They played multiple fronts on us with movements and guys just came clean. Those are mental things that you can fix. They are teachable things that we can grow from. If a guy was in front of us and we were getting manhandled then I would be concerned because then it would be a personnel issue of someone who could struggle with a defensive line of a Big 12 opponent that is bigger, faster and more dominant. Although we were not perfect there is an answer for it; communication, identification and being on the same page. Really if you have five guys there, they are individual battles in a sense but they are not because they are a unit that has to function well and identify and communicate. When people do something they have not shown then there has to be in-game adjustments. It was identified but not always communicated the right way. Our guys are talented enough to be able to hold their own against this Baylor defense. We just have to do a better job of coaching them and having them prepared for the nuances of the game.

On the play of running backs Sincere McCormick and Brenden Brady:

I do. We played four backs. And those two got the lions share in this game because of how we needed to attack this defense and the strength that they gave us. The running back position is one that uses multiple players. If you know anything about my history personally, we’ve always used 2-3-4-5 guys in one backfield at one time. There is enough balls to go around to keep guys fresh, dominant and fast, to affect the outcome of the game. That is our intention to play multiple backs throughout the game. They are similar in styles but both different. They both have good vision and feet. When Deven Boston and B.J. Daniels come in they are able to give physicality. Something that is assaulting and downhill that allows us to put a dent in the defense.
