North Texas Mean Green College Football Pregame Quote, 09/24/2019
Opponent: Houston Cougars, Coach
It was great to be back home this past week with the total, complete effort by our group to beat UTSA. Something that we’ve really stressed, especially this past week, in the week of practice is making sure that we’re locked in and correcting our mistakes from the previous weeks, and I felt like we did that. I was encouraged by the way we started the game. We started fast in all three phases. It was our most complete game. I was really proud of the effort that our guys gave throughout the course of the game. I know we’re going to have to correct some of those mistakes that we had this previous week. As well as we play and as hard as we played, there’s always things that we can get better on and continue to grow as a team on, and we’re going to have to be focused and locked in for four quarters in order to beat a great Houston team. Don’t let the record fool you. They’ve had a very, very tough early schedule. I know that what you see on tape is they’re an explosive team that’ll be a great challenge for us, and we’re locked in and ready to roll forward.
On his reaction to the news that Houston QB D’Eriq King and WR Keith Corbin are expected to redshirt:
I didn’t have a reaction. They [Houston] have explosive tape. It’s not just about one guy or two guys or any of that. They have great players, great coaches. There’s no doubt I think Dana [Holgorsen] does a great job of putting points on the board and he understands how to attack, and he’ll have his team ready to play, so I’m not focused one bit about that situation.
On preparations for Houston with a different quarterback:
It really doesn’t. I think as explosive as they are on offense, I know whatever quarterback they use, they’ll understand the system. I’ve been around Dana a long time. He’s going to do what he does. He’s always going to have some wrinkles, but again, he’s going to put players in the best situation to be successful so we’re going to have to be locked in on all three phases. Defensively, whoever the quarterback is doesn’t really matter. It’s more about making sure that our alignment, our assignment and our technique is right.
On rushing for nearly 300 yards last week against UTSA:
I’ve always said balance is being able to do whatever you need to do to win a football game. If you’ve got to run the football to win a game, you do. I want to be a physical team, and I believe it starts up front on both sides – both offense and defense. If you control the line of scrimmage, great things are going to happen.‚Äù
On Seth’s relationship with Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen:
I’ve known Dana a long time. He’s a good friend of mine and was a good mentor when I went to Texas Tech. He was our co-offensive coordinator with Coach (Sonny) Dykes, Coach (Bill) Bedenbaugh, Lincoln (Riley), there were a lot of us and we were a tight group. So yeah, our relationship’s great. I think he’s still mad I arm-barred him that time in the weight room (at Texas Tech), but other than that, I think we’re OK.
